Joint Health & Safety Committee
(JHSC)
Certification Training

Book A Meeting

Creating a safe, compliant workplace starts with a clear understanding of health and safety responsibilities. Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC) play a key role in supporting a strong safety culture, especially as a mandatory requirement for workplaces with more than 20 employees.

Certification helps committee members recognize hazards, assess risks, and take meaningful action to improve workplace conditions. To complete certification in Ontario, participants must finish both JHSC Part 1 and Part 2, which can be delivered through instructor-led training (ILT) or a combination of online training for Part 1 and ILT for Part 2.

Whether you’re just joining your workplace committee or renewing your credentials, Danatec’s CPO-approved JHSC Certification program equips you with the knowledge and skills to fulfill your legal duties under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA). Learners can complete the full certification through two pathways:

1. Attend five consecutive days of distance instructor-led training (ILT) for both Part 1 and Part 2, or
2. Take JHSC Part 1 online at your own pace (approximately 13 hours), followed by a two-day live ILT session for Part 2.

Both formats cover all required topics—from the legislative framework and hazard recognition to workplace inspections and incident investigations—so you can confidently apply best practices in your role as a JHSC member.

What JHSC Training Focuses On

Danatec’s training courses equip workers with the proper knowledge and tools to conduct workplace inspections and participate in incident investigations. Upon completion of both parts of the JHSC certification training, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the Certification Process: Describe the full JHSC certification path and explain the responsibilities of a certified Joint Health and Safety Committee member.
  • Navigate Health and Safety Legislation: Identify key occupational health and safety legislation, access relevant information, and explain core rights, responsibilities, and training obligations.
  • Apply JHSC Principles and Legal Functions: Describe the legal framework, structure, and duties of a JHSC, and explain how a functioning committee operates effectively in the workplace.
  • Assess and Control Workplace Hazards: Understand the main categories of hazards and apply the steps of hazard recognition, assessment, control, and evaluation (RACE model).
  • Hazard Identification and Control: Apply learned principles through realistic scenarios to recognize, assess, and implement hazard controls in a workplace setting.
  • Workplace Incidents: Understand and articulate the required processes for reporting and investigating fatalities, critical injuries, work refusals, and dangerous situations.
  • Access Health and Safety Information: Review the legal requirements for accessing OH&S information and demonstrate how to locate and use common sources of health and safety documentation.

Who must complete JHSC Part 1 & Part 2 training?

Any workplace in Ontario with 20 or more employees is required to have a JHSC and at least two certified JHSC members (one worker, one management-level worker).

What is the difference between Part 1 & Part 2?

Part 1 of JHSC training covers legal duties, committee roles, OHSA legislation, and basic committee functioning. Part 2 dives into specific hazards (e.g. slips/trips/falls, ergonomics, hazardous products, psychosocial risks, violence/harassment) and applies Part 1 concepts through inspections and investigations.

How do I renew my JHSC certification?

Every three years, you can take Danatec's 1-day JHSC Refresher course to maintain JHSC certification. Training includes key concepts and updates to legislation, standards, and best practices.
Refresher training must be completed prior to a current JHSC certifications expiry date.

What delivery format can I take?

You can complete Part 1 online, either by yourself at your own pace or attend an instructor-led session. For Part 2, you can complete it online by attending an instructor-led session.

What’s included in JHSC Part 1 Online Training?

This course is fully online and self-paced, with an approximate duration of 13 hours. It’s officially approved by Ontario’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) and meets all learning outcomes set by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). Learners will engage with interactive content, including case-based scenarios, workplace inspection simulations, and expert-led videos. JHSC Part 1 concludes with a 31-question final exam, requiring a passing score of 75%, with two attempts allowed.

What’s included in JHSC Part 2 Instructor-Led Training?

This course is delivered virtually through live, instructor-led training over five days. Sessions are facilitated by expert instructors with real-world industry experience. Learners participate in real-time discussions, analyze scenarios, and apply hazard controls to real-world scenarios. Learners will also receive personalized feedback and interact directly with instructors. The training focuses on sector-specific hazard recognition, assessment, control, and evaluation.
