Course Overview

Creating a safe, compliant workplace in Ontario begins with a solid understanding of health and safety responsibilities under the law. Whether you’re a new or existing member of a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), this course is your first step toward making a meaningful impact on workplace safety.

Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification is required for employees in Ontario who wish to serve on their workplace’s health and safety committee. In workplaces with more than 20 employees, these committees play a vital role in establishing and maintaining internal health and safety programs under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Certification helps ensure that members are equipped to identify hazards, assess risks, and take action to promote safer working conditions.

Danatec’s JHSC Certification Part 1 eLearning course is fully approved by Ontario’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) and meets all training requirements under Section 9 of the OHSA. It aligns with the learning outcomes set by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and is valid across all sectors—including construction, education, manufacturing, retail, and healthcare.

This flexible, self-paced online course provides foundational legal knowledge, real-world hazard control strategies, and interactive scenarios. Learners will gain the skills needed to conduct workplace inspections, participate in investigations, and support the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) to help prevent occupational illness and injury.

To achieve full certification, participants must also complete Part 2 through instructor-led training (ILT), offered virtually over five days. This live, interactive course reinforces Part 1 content while allowing learners to apply principles in case-based activities, ask questions, and receive personalized feedback from experienced instructors. The ILT format offers practical insight and essential clarity on how Ontario's health and safety regulations apply directly to real-world jobsite scenarios.

Upon completion of both parts of the JHSC certification training, participants will be able to:

Understand the Certification Process
Describe the full JHSC certification path and explain the responsibilities of a certified Joint Health and Safety Committee member.

Recognize Workplace Roles and Responsibilities
Explain the importance of occupational health and safety in Ontario and identify the duties of each workplace party under OHSA.

Navigate Health and Safety Legislation
Identify key occupational health and safety legislation, access relevant information, and explain core rights, responsibilities, and training obligations.

Apply JHSC Principles and Legal Functions
Describe the legal framework, structure, and duties of a JHSC, and explain how a functioning committee operates effectively in the workplace.

Assess and Control Workplace Hazards
Understand the main categories of hazards and apply the steps of hazard recognition, assessment, control, and evaluation (RACE model).

Practice Hazard Identification and Control
Apply learned principles through realistic scenarios to recognize, assess, and implement hazard controls in a workplace setting.

Respond to Workplace Incidents
Understand and articulate the required processes for reporting and investigating fatalities, critical injuries, work refusals, and dangerous situations.

Access Health and Safety Information
Review the legal requirements for accessing OH&S information and demonstrate how to locate and use common sources of health and safety documentation.
