Road Safety Training System (RSTS) Basic
The Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association has developed the Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS) as an essential and comprehensive introduction to working safely in roadbuilding and heavy construction. Created by health and safety experts, the RSTS Basic course is an excellent tool for onboarding new workers or as a safety refresher for experienced employees in the road and civil construction industries. The course structure of 12 successive modules builds upon knowledge previously presented to reinforce the learning of critical safety awareness concepts.
- The importance of planning work to control risks
- Conducting regular individual and site specific hazard assessments
- Situational awareness and recognizing potential safety hazards on site
- Training and competency as a critical requirement for all tasks
- When unsure, always clarify with your supervisor before performing work
This course is intended for anyone who works in road building or heavy civil construction – work crew, traffic control persons, surveyors and testing personnel and heavy equipment operators. After completing this course, the learner will significantly improve their ability to identify hazards, manage risks and reduce incidents at the work site.
Course content is engaging and highly visual with real worksite video, key concepts and terms reinforced by text and imagery, interactive graphics, and learning assessments throughout based on on-the-job scenarios. There is a final exam at the end of each module with an 80% pass rate required to complete the RSTS Basic course and obtain the certificate.
