Road Safety Training System (RSTS) Basic
Course by: ARHCA

Description
The Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association has developed the Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS) as an essential and comprehensive introduction to working safely in roadbuilding and heavy construction. Created by health and safety experts, the RSTS Complete course is a combination of the RSTS Basic course and individual modules for the various specialties of the road and civil construction industries.
RSTS BASIC
The RSTS Basic is an excellent tool for onboarding new workers or as a safety refresher for experienced employees in the road and civil construction industries. The course structure of 12 successive modules builds upon knowledge previously presented to reinforce the learning of critical safety awareness concepts.
- The importance of planning work to control risks
- Conducting regular individual and site specific hazard assessments
- Situational awareness and recognizing potential safety hazards on site
- Training and competency as a critical requirement for all tasks
- When unsure, always clarify with your supervisor before performing work
SPECIALTY MODULES
The 12 specialty modules focus on the work required to build and maintain large civil construction projects from earthmoving to production of concrete to maintaining roadways. Each module introduces the various roles and responsibilities involved in the work, key hazards on the worksite, and the specialized terms, equipment and tasks the learner could encounter. The learner is referred back to the RSTS Basic course for general safety awareness knowledge. The specialty modules are separate licenses within the RSTS Complete course and can be distributed to learners as required.
Course content is engaging and highly visual with real worksite video, key concepts and terms reinforced by text and imagery, interactive graphics, and learning assessments throughout based on on-the-job scenarios. There is a final exam at the end of each module with an 80% pass rate required to complete the RSTS Complete course and obtain the RSTS Basic and the specialty certificates.
The RSTS Complete course is intended for anyone who works in road building or heavy civil construction – ground workers, plant workers, heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, or is interested in a career in the industry. After completing this course, the learner will understand how civil projects are built and their ability to identify hazards, manage risks and reduce incidents at all types of road building and heavy construction work sites will significantly improve.
