This course is the first step in training Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members in Ontario. To be fully certified under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), participants must successfully complete both Part 1 and Part 2 of the training program.Please note: This is a live, instructor-led course delivered virtually (online). Learners will join scheduled sessions led by a qualified instructor in a virtual classroom setting. This format combines the benefits of real-time interaction with the convenience of remote access.Ontario law requires that workplaces with 20 or more regular employees establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), with at least two Certified members—one representing workers and one representing management. This three-day Part 1 course provides foundational knowledge and practical skills that apply across all sectors.

Key legal rights, duties, and responsibilities of certified members
Identification of common workplace hazards
Hazard assessment and control strategies
How to conduct inspections, investigations, and other essential JHSC functions
This course is approved by Ontario’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) and satisfies all regulatory requirements for JHSC Part 1 certification.

Syllabus
Module 1: Introduction to Legislation
- Gain foundational knowledge of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
Module 2: Introduction to Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs)
- Understand the structure, purpose, and legal role of JHSCs within Ontario workplaces.
Module 3 – Hazard Recognition, Assessment, and Control
- Develop skills to recognize common hazards, assess risk levels, apply effective control strategies using the hierarchy of controls, and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented controls.
Module 4 – Conducting Workplace Inspections
- Learn how to plan, conduct, and document workplace inspections as a JHSC member. Includes reporting tools and follow-up procedures.
Module 5 – Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Understand legal requirements for incident reporting and learn the step-by-step process for conducting effective investigations in compliance with the OHSA.
